Restaurant Review: Enoteca Turi
Enoteca Turi is a wonderful Italian restaurant conveniently located just south of Putney Bridge. It’s a short walk from Putney Bridge station on the District Line and is also easily accessible by bus and overland train to Putney station.
This is not your regular pizza and pasta place. It has a carefully crafted menu with dishes from every Italian region, each annotated with a helpful wine suggestion. Owner Guiseppe and maître d’ Cesare gave us the warmest of welcomes and are both clearly proud and passionate about the food and the wine.
Enoteca Turi has been in Putney for 25 years. On the Tuesday night we visited, it was busy with a regular well-heeled crowd who clearly love the restaurant and its owner. This is definitely the place for a special date when you’re keen to impress.
The food is excellent and beautifully presented. While we were looking at the menu, we were served bread baked freshly on the premises. Cesare explained every dish on the menu – the ingredients and the origin. We were spoilt for choice.
For starters we had asparagus on potato pancake with organic egg yolk coated in parmesan, butter and sage, and carpaccio of sea scallops with fennel salad and lemon dressing. The scallops were delicate and light, while the asparagus was tasty and colourful.
For our main course we had roast veal, cured meat and spinach agnolotti with butter and veal jus, and pan-fried calf’s liver with dry Marsala, caramelised onion tart and sage mash. Although the dishes have some fairly complex descriptions, the ingredients worked together effortlessly – the liver was cooked to perfection and the flavours in the pasta dish were exquisitely balanced. To finish, we sampled the chef’s special dessert – Cannoncini dello Chef No. 7 – and a lemon sponge with strawberries.
The wine list is, frankly, incredible. The literal translation for enoteca is “wine repository”, and the team here don’t disappoint on that score. The list is huge and has been put together with great care, representing every major wine region in Italy. All tastes and price points are represented. It’s fair to say we didn’t do it justice with our carafe of rosé.
Overall, Enoteca Turi gave us a beautiful evening with great service. The food was cooked to perfection, and there’s a great menu that will satisfy every taste. We loved it.
